Chamberlain Liftmaster Formula 1 Garage Door Opener

by Rick
(Arvada, Co)

I have a 7-year old Chamberlain Liftmaster Formula 1. Intermitently when I close the door it will only close partially, then reverse and go back up.

The problem is becoming progressively worse. It will catch at various spots when coming down.

The beam seems to be lined up. And I have tried adjusting the closing strength controls etc.

Any ideas? A new spring or door opener isn't in the budget right now. Thanks.

Is the door catching (binding) in the track? If so, it could be worn rollers, bent track or something obstructing movement. You will probably need to disconnect the operator to find out. It should open and close smoothly.

Is the door properly balanced? Disconnect the opener mechanism (pull the release cord or lever) and open the door halfway manually. Does the door then move when you let go? If not, or even if it moves just a few inches, it is balanced. If it closes or opens on its own, the springs need adjusting.
