Garage Door Opener Release Latch Won't Hold

The release latch that holds the garage door on the chain drive will not hold weight of garage door.

It was pulled on and it broke free and it will not stay latched while raising and lowering.

Are you certain it is fully engaged?

Sometimes you have to jiggle the chain while pushing the emergency release handle back up before it fully engages.
