Garage door opens but won't close

I can open it but it won't close with the Keyless entry or remote key.

Will it close when you press and hold the wall control button?

If so, Your infrared safety sensors are out of alignment.

The infrared beam from the sending unit must strike the lens of the receiving unit.

If you get down to eye level with the receiver you can see that the indicator lamp is blinking rapidly.

Twist the sending unit to bend the bracket slightly in the correct direction, until the indicator light stops blinking and remains on continuously.

Everything should work as usual once the safety sensors are aligned properly.

There is also a less common occurrence where the wires can be broken or shorted between the sensors and the motor assembly.

You could also have a bad sensor or control board.

Craftsman 139.53674srt2 will not close with remote
by: George

A truly frustrating problem, the door will go up but will not go down with the remote. Wall mount will close the door. Have green lights on both sensors and nothing blocking the eyes. When pushing the remote button to close, I get nothing as far as lights, hums, etc. In the summer time when warmer the down button will work on occasion. The remotes have been reprogrammed with same results. Thanks for any assistance.

Are you saying that the wall control button, when pressed and held, will only close the door occasionally? If not, it sounds like the safety sensors are just slightly out of alignment. Just a few degrees change in temperature can bring them out of alignment enough for them to stop working. Can you clarify a bit?

Same story but...
by: Anonymous

1996 Liftmaster 1/3 hp Pro. Both sensors show green lights. Don't see any flickering and they seem about equal in brightness. Unlatched the door and it seems to roll pretty easily up and down with no binding that I can sense. Did lube everything I could think of that might need it (anything that moved!). Door goes up with remote and wall switch. Goes down holding the wall switch and once about 5 or ten times (varies) it will go down all the way with one pressing. Otherwise you can catch it as it starts back and work it down. Remotes...one pressing never seems to do it (came on quickly...one day the usual no problem and then this) and you just can't get it down no matter what, even trying to catch it. Did clean the lenses for the sensors. The one that the light goes out when blocked is about three years old the other is at least eleven years old (we have never replaced it). So, replace sensors with the new snap ones and run new wires...or a logic panel or? It has been cold (15 F and the garage isn't heated and it is kinda damp but not wet...door has been very protected with an extension of the roof for about two years.

Sounds like the sensors are still out of alignment.

door closes but reverses as soon as it hits bottom
by: JOE CRESIMORE

door will open ok but when closing it goes all the way down but wont stay down it reverses and goes back up OVERHEAD DOOR LEGACY 696 CDSHRANK
-------------------------------------
It sounds like the close limit is out of adjustment - the door does not know it is fully closed when it strikes the floor. Adjust the close limit on the trolley by moving it further from the door.

Garage door opens but won't close
by: Violet Willsey

Thank you garagedooropenerguide.com! I figured out the problem after reading comments in this website. I wrote earlier about the sunlight blocking the red eye sensor that caused my garage door not to open. You saved me money from getting repair work that is not needed. Two months ago, I had been advised the rail for the chain pulling the garage door up and down needed to be changed. I believe I had the same problem originally. I spent $170 on the new rail, yet after two months, the same problem occurred. Thank God, I read your website. It is certainly helpful. My garage door opener is Marantec and 5 years old.

Garage door opens but won't close
by: Violet Willsey

All the sensors are in good condition, no loose wire or bad wiring. What I just now found out that the sunlight hitting the red eye sensor kept the garage door from closing. It's 6:00 p.m. spring time. The red eye sensor had already been placed in another spot (during another season). The garage door opened up and closed down without a problem. This season, springtime, the sunlight started to hit the red eye sensor again and caused my garage door not to close. Very interesting. Something needs to be invented to shield the red eye sensor from sunlight at different seasons of the year.

Garage door opens but won't close
by: Anonymous

Recently I tried closing my garage door and it would not close. It has been working for the past year. When I try closing the door it would open back up. Each time I tried the travel of the door would get shorter until it would go about a foot and open back up. None of the lights are blinking. What should I do to correct this problem?

opener works properly 90% of the time
by: rightnau

about once a month my garage door will only open about 1 foot when using remote access. You nust go inside tto open the door, sometimes this takes 2 or 3 tries at holding the button down.

Generlly speaking the door opener will work properly for about a month and then start up again.

Looking for answers.

Thanks

Sometimes door works
by: Larry

Garage door goes up, but sometimes will not go down. Works about 3 times without a problem, then goes back to not going down. Goes a little bit then goes up again. Had MVP here to look at it, and it worked perfectly. Soon as he left, started not to work again.
