Garage Floor Treatment

The garage is probably one of the most boring areas of your home. A great way to turn it into a thing of beauty is by applying one of several different garage floor treatment options that are available on today's market.

A good option to consider is a solvent-based urethane. You will find that this repels not only vehicle fluids but oil and tire tracks as well.

All of the previously mentioned can stain a concrete floor. If your vehicle happens to leak something, all you must do is wipe the coated floor off and you are finished.

You can either do this job yourself or you can call on a professional to do the job in case you are not a "handy man" or you don't have the time to do the job.

When you want to apply a solvent-based urethane treatment for your garage floor, the first thing you must do is to clean the surface using a high-pressure power washer to remove all stains and dirt. If you have a scouring machine, you can scrub the garage floor using a good water and detergent solution. Otherwise, you will have to use some really good "elbow grease" to get the job done.

Next you will have to apply a solution of muriatic acid. This will etch the garage floor. This is going to rough up the floor because you want a good bond to form between the floor coating and the concrete floor.

If any areas of the floor are broken or cracked then a garage floor treatment mixture of sand and epoxy is used to fill in those areas before the protective coating is applied. Using a metal squeegee, roll out the primer with a nap roller that is 3/8 of an inch. This should dry overnight.

If you want to have a unique finish, then throw down colored paint flakes to the floor's wet surface after the base coat is applied. Your floor will really be unique and one that no one else has. The paint and the flakes should dry overnight and the next day a sealer should be applied.

Some sealers require only one coat while others may require two. If you are applying more than one coat, wait a few hours before the second coat is applied. You should be very impressed with your work when it is completed.

If you would prefer a much easier garage floor treatment, then you may just want to lay industrial mats around the garage. These come in a variety of sizes, and you can easily clean these mats with soap and water.

When the mats need to be cleaned you can either remove them from the garage or leave them right where they are. These industrial mats are quite durable and will last a long time if they are cleaned at regular intervals. You should not use any strong chemicals to clean them as it will damage the mats.

Most garages are used to store the family car, minivan or SUV. However, some people use their garage as a spare room and leave the car parked outside. In this case, the garage floor treatment will be more along the lines of linoleum and vinyl for décor and durability.

Choose the appropriate flooring to match whatever the garage is going to be used for. If you turn it into a game room, you will probably want to install carpet.

The floor in your garage should be protected. A variety of methods have been noted that will protect any concrete floor no matter if it is using a garage floor sealer or if it happens to be any other type of garage floor treatment.
