So many people think that a yard sale is not worth their time because they have had an unsuccessful sale in the past or know someone who did. Select Your Inventory

Start going through all of the rooms in your house one by one. Search high and low and in all of the closets for things that could make a little bit at a yard sale. A great way to decide what should or should not go into your yard sale is to ask yourself whether or not you have used a particular item in the past year.

If you have not used that strange pot in the last three years, is there any reason to keep it? If you have an overload of things such as books or shoes, decide that a certain percentage must make its way into the garage sale box.

Set Your Date

Pick a date from your calendar, which will be the day for your yard sale. Avoid having an all weekend long garage sale. Most people are off from work on both Saturday and Sunday and if you are advertising right, everyone will make their way to your sale on Saturday. After all, they want the good stuff instead of the leftovers that are still sitting around on Sunday.

Make sure that you are advertising as much as possible up to the date of your sale. Talk to everyone you can about it. Place flyers or posters on the community bulletin boards at your church, school, grocery store, library and everywhere else that you can think of. With the right advertising, you should have a very successful garage sale. Don't forget to put up plenty of signs pointing toward your sale the night before or early in the morning before your event.

The Big Day

Make sure that you are selling your heart out, without becoming annoying to your customers. Allow them to bargain with you a little. After all, is it really worth losing a sale for a dollar difference?

Have plenty of change on hand and make sure that you have some bags, such as the ones from the grocery store, on hand, so that your shoppers can carry all of their newfound treasures home with them.

After the Sale

Whatever does not go during the garage sale needs to be donated to charity. The items that went into the sale are obviously not needed by you so you want to make sure that they are not finding their way back into your house.

And the last of these garage sale tips is to take down all the signs you posted on the street directing people to your sale. You don't want a lot of people coming to your house expecting to find a rummage sale when it is already over.
