Garage Storage Ceiling Spaces
Often Unused Territory

When you are organizing your garage space, one of the most unused spaces is of course the garage storage ceiling area, which is usually unfinished, and has open rafters.

If you think about it, this may be the one area where you can store all of your storage items that you don't use on a regular basis, or just seasonally. Keeping this in mind, there are many different garage ceiling organizers available, from a number of outlets.

HyLoft Overhead Storage System

One of the easiest forms of garage storage ceiling products is a simple bracket and rack system. These brackets attach directly to the ceiling joist of your garage, with different heights available, and have racks for the bottom. Some of these can hold heavy weights, with some websites offering these products showing people actually hanging from them.

Once in place, you simply buy your different bins, either from the company selling the system, or from just about any kind of mass marketing retailer. You fill them up, and store them conveniently overhead, out of the way. This opens up the total floor space in your garage, so you can clutter it up even more, or use it to finally store what should be there, your vehicles.

Now while this may be the simplest and cheapest way to go, there are some drawbacks. One of them is that even if the racks end just above your head, you still have to reach up, or climb a ladder to get at your stored items. Another disadvantage is that if you have something in the back, you have to pull everything else out, or move it around to get to what you need.

Unless you have clear bins, or label the bottoms, you don't know what you're getting at. For older people, or those who have movement problems, it can be a real pain, as well as down right dangerous to do overhead lifting, or have to climb up and down a ladder.

One of the more popular, and yet still quite affordable alternatives to the rack system is the easy lift elevator system. From Racor, they offer the ProStor Heavy Lift Garage Elevator. This is one of the most easy to use, yet simple systems that have come out in recent years. Here is how it works.

One part of the garage storage ceiling systems is a ceiling mounted bracket system, and you can use it for ceilings up to twelve feet high. This bracket is an H shape, with pulleys at the ends, and a turning axle in the center. Four heavy duty vinyl coated steel cables are attached to the center, as well as a four foot square platform grid, which can support up to 250 pounds per platform.

Once the unit is put together and installed, a simple hand crank is used to raise and lower the platform, up to eight feet off the ground, depending on ceiling height. All the mounting hardware is included, and the wire platform is designed so you can see what is stored overhead quickly and easily.

Because of it's compact size, you can even buy more than one for all of your storage needs. Since just one unit can support weights of up to 250 pounds, you can store tires, your snow blower, or any kind of bulky, heavy items safely and securely. The best part about these garage storage ceiling systems is the cost. For one unit, not including shipping, cost just around $160.
