How to Have a Garage Sale
If you have started to notice that you have more stuff sitting around the house than you ever use, it is time for a garage sale. There is simply no reason to hold onto things for the next ten years if you have no use for them.
The first thing you want to do is to pick the date of your sale. You will want to make this on a weekend in order to get the greatest number of people. One-day sales are always best because by the second day, everyone has already come to the sale and you will be sitting out there in the garage for eight hours just to earn a few dollars. It isn't worth the second day. After you have set the date, you want to start advertising the sale. Put up flyers on all of the local bulletin boards that you can find. There are usually some in the grocery stores, libraries, post offices, and some times even the gas stations. Check to see if there are town rules preventing you putting up signs on telephone poles. If you are allowed to do this, it is a great way to advertise. Now that you have the specifics of the sale all set, you need to start going through your house and bagging up everything that you no longer use. If you have not used it within the last six to twelve months, you can put it in the sale. Make a rule of thumb for things such as books - half must go. Give each member of the family a box and tell them they have to fill it up. If they do not do it, you will do it for them. This alone should be enough motivation for them to fill up the boxes on their own. Attach pricing labels to each item so you won't spend all your time answering questions about prices. Some people will want to do some bargaining so be ready to lower prices a little or offer a special price for quantities to those that ask. Be sure you have enough tables so you can display everything where people can find what you have. If they don't see it you won't sell it. Be sure to have plenty of change on hand when you have a garage sale.
