Replace Gears In Craftsman Garage Door Opener

by ved

I have a craftsman 1/2 hp garage door opener - the plastic gear is worn

how easy is it to replace that - do it yourself?

Looks pretty tricky taking it out.

The plastic one there now is shredded - plastic stuff all over when taking the cover off...
model # 139.53648SRT

There is an illustrated article for this at http://www.stardoorparts.com/How_to_replace_your_garage_door_opener_gears_s/30.htm

You MUST APPLY LOW TEMP LITHIUM GREASE TO each TOOTH OF NEW GEAR

Gear will shred within days if low temp lithium grease is not applied to each gear tooth

The kit you need for this replacement is listed at the top of page at http://www.garagedooropenerguide.com/liftmaster-garage-door-parts.html

Craftsman openers are made by Liftmaster so units are identical.
