How To Organize a Rummage Sale

If you are thinking about putting together a rummage sale to make a little bit of extra money, it is important to make sure that you are organized. This way, you will be able to make the most out of your time and the things that you are selling. Without the proper organization, you might find that your event is no where near the success that you had hoped it would be.

The first step to proper organization is planning ahead. If you can, try to start preparing for your sale a month in advance. Take it one room at a time and go through everything. From floor to ceiling, you want to closely examine everything. Determine what you need and what you don't.

Do you really need twenty serving spoons? Are you really ever going to listen to those cassettes again? The rule of thumb should be that if you have not used it in the last year - you do not need it and therefore it should be in the sell box.

Once you have gone through the entire house and collected everything that you want to try to sell at the rummage sale, you will need to sit down and price everything. Use sale stickers and a black marker so that everything is clearly marked. If your things are not priced, there is a good chance that they will not sell because most people won't even bother asking you what the price is. Also, would you really want to answer the same question about a baby doll twenty times in a day. Just mark a price on everything and be done with it.

Now that you have priced everything, you will want to organize everything into "like items". Basically, all of your kitchen items go into one box, all books into another box, all clothes into another box and so on. This way, when you set up your tables outside or in the garage, you will be able to group everything in a proper manner. This makes shopping easier for your customers. When they can easily find things, they will be more likely to spend more money.

It is also important to make sure that you are properly advertising your rummage sale. If you can, run an advertisement in the paper. You will also want to hang up signs all over town. Give the date and time of the sale, along with the address and some basic instructions. The easier it is to find your sale, the more customers you will get, which means you will make a good bit of money.

Focus on a one day sale. Most people will not come out on the second day and all of the good stuff you have would likely be picked through on the first day anyway. There is no need to sit out in your yard all day just to make another ten dollars. Also, whatever is left over needs to be placed in the garbage or donated - depending on the condition of things that are left.

If you have large items that you cannot haul to donate, there are many non-profit organizations out there that will send a truck to your house to pick everything up - free of charge.

Now you are ready for your rummage sale!
