service light and constant beeping

the service light on our craftsman (die hard) garage door opener is on and it beeps constantly. (we just moved in as renters...no manual...any ideas? Does the opener system open and close the garage door? If so, the beeping is probably telling you the battery in the backup system needs replacing.
